Telkom's AFCON operations a success

Telkom is pleased to report smooth operations for the duration of the 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Telkom Business Managing Director Dr Brian Armstrong said the company delivered all required services seamlessly. "All technical operations ran like clockwork without any glitches whatsoever. Optimal technical services are crucial for the success of such occasions."

The Company delivered a range of critical services for the major sporting event. The 2013 AFCON took place from 19 January until 10 February. Telkom rendered a range of Information Technology and Telecommunications (IT&T) services for the duration.

Telkom was chosen as the ICT provider for the event for several reasons, including a credible track record and technical expertise based on the successes attained during the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2010 FIFA World Cup.

To deliver a flawless communication experience throughout the event, Telkom made use of best practices adopted during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The Company delivered an IP based Virtual Private Network (VPN) for the purposes of voice, data and video traffic. This ensured that the Local Organising Committee's (LOC's) Sandton headquarters were connected in real-time to the five stadiums being used (Johannesburg, Nelspruit, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Rustenburg).

For the first time at a major sporting event, Telkom provided a range of both voice and data mobile services and products.

To ensure that this African sporting event could be broadcast internationally, Telkom made provision for Internet access for both national and international communication to be used by the international media fraternity.

Telkom also deployed six telepresence units at the stadiums and LOC headquarters in Sandton to support the operational requirements of the AFCON LOC.
