Gamers gear up for Telkom's DGL championships

The Telkom Do Gaming LAN (DGL) championships kicked off today as gamers began battling it out for a share of the largest prize pool in South African gaming history: over half a million Rand in cash prizes.

With over 560 gamers from Telkom's online Do Gaming League this championship also marks another milestone as the largest competitive LAN ever in SA.

The championships are taking place in the VIP section at the rAge expo, in Johannesburg from 5 to 7 October. Prizes include Alienware X51 rigs, cash and a year's supply of Monster Energy Drinks.

Ricus Groenewald, Telkom Specialist Gaming, says, "This marks the fifth year of the championships with collective prizes far exceeding the R1 million rand mark. This year gamers are competing for a share of R290 000 in cash and over R250 000 in hardware prizes."

"To ensure the best gaming experience we have installed a dedicated line of 150 MB to ensure the lowest pings possible for the Do Gaming Championships to ensure that Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Starcraft 2 and Gran Turismo 5 events,' he added.

Groenewald says the DGL has grown by 106 percent this year and has seen some major sponsorships for the league and LAN championships from the likes of Electronic Arts, Incredible Connection, Logitech, Megarom and Monster Energy Drinks who have all contributed to the overall prize pool.

In addition Alienware will be sponsoring Alienware X51 gaming rigs for the winners of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty 4 competitions as well as three X51 Rigs for gamers who report on the DGL on the Do Gaming Community Blog (www.dogamingblog.co.za).

"We're seeing more and more gamers moving online because of the opportunity to play with their friends as well as test their skills against the best gamers in the country. Some of the gamers will spend over 20 hours a week honing their skills in preparation for their weekly DGL match.

"The DGL Championship gives these gamers the chance to fight it out in a LAN environment for their ultimate test of their skills," he said.

Along with the DGL Championships, Telkom will also be giving local gamers their first look at Electronic Arts' Medal of Honor: Warfighter on their stand at the rAge expo, giving gamers the chance to see the game in action before its release towards the end of October, 2012. The game will be running on high-performing Aurora Alienware PC's.

Gamers will also be able to play EA Sport's FIFA 13 at the Telkom stand, while enjoying super-fast broadband with a dedicated Internet pipe running to the stand. This will give visitors the chance to see what a "connected home" is like with staff being on-hand to answer questions, give advice and showcase today's broadband technology.

Telkom will also have the Global Battlefield 3 Community Manager, Daniel Matros, at the stand who will be answering questions from fans about the Battlefield 3 franchise which has been one of the most popular games in the DGL.
