SATNAC 2012 explores: "The Internet of Things"

The future of "all things connected" is upon us.

Africa's top ICT conference, the annual Southern Africa Telecommunications Networks and Applications Conference (SATNAC), will this year explore the emergence of smart homes and cities that is driving this trend.

The theme: "The Internet of Things ¿ Smart Homes and Cities... Evolution or Tsunami?" will prompt debate around the challenges, opportunities and regulatory considerations.

Numerous keynote presentations will also investigate the impact of smart networks, smart devices and the convergence of technology.

Mr Alphonzo Samuels, Telkom's Managing Executive for Network Infrastructure Provisioning and Conference Chairman says, "SATNAC is famous for its futuristic plenary presentations and hard hitting panel discussions featuring experts from all over the world."

"The conference celebrates its fifteenth anniversary having become well known as the meeting place for industry veterans to discuss emerging trends and topical issues facing the ICT industry," he adds.

SATNAC also attracts top level speakers and this year the Honourable Minister of Communications, Ms Dina Pule, will deliver the opening address.

This will be followed by a keynote address will be delivered by Dr Bernie Fanaroff, Project Manager of the Square Kilometre Array project. Delegates can also look forward to a keynote presentation by leading strategist, futurist and thinker, Pieter Geldenhuys, entitled Business Unusual.

Robust discussions can also be expected from the panel sessions as Ms Nombulelo Moholi, Group CEO of Telkom; Mr Adrian Scrase, CTO of ETSI; Mr Derek Wilcocks, CEO of Dimension Data and Mr Paul Excell, CEO and Founder of InXLnovation discusses the impact that "The internet of things" will have from an operator's perspective.

On day two, panelists including Mr Edwin Thompson, GM: Technology for MTN Business Infrastructure, Mr Marius Oberholzer, MD of SAINET, Mr Laurie Fialkov, CEO of Cybersmart and Mr Steven White, Executive: Converged Business Services for Telkom debate the challenges and regulatory environment shaping the "internet of things" from an Internet service provider's perspective.

Other high level plenary speakers include, Mr Deon Naidoo, CTO of Ericsson South Africa, Ms Adel Demian, GM: Technology Strategy for Saab -Grintek and Dr Brian Armstrong MD for Telkom Business.

Hosted by Telkom, the three day conference will run from 2-5 September 2012 and will take place at the Fancourt Hotel in George in the Western Cape.

The conference starts with a Welcome Function on Sunday evening. The traditional icebreaker golf day will begin at 09:30 on Sunday at The Links Golf Club.

Summit TV, the official broadcast partner for the conference, will broadcast the plenary sessions live and will also broadcast a highlights package in the week after the conference. Summit TV is available on DSTV Channel 412.

  • Data Centre Operations includes e-commerce, application service provider, hosting, data storage, e-mail and security services;
  • W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), a 3G next generation network, including fixed voice services, data services and nomadic voice services;
  • mobile communication services, including voice services, data services and handset sales through our mobile navbar-brand called Telkom Mobile;
  •  information and communication services including cloud services, infrastructure services, workspace services, global service integration management and hardware and network equipment sales locally, in seven African countries, the UK and Dubai through Business Connexion Group; and
  • other services including directory services, through Trudon (Pty) Ltd, wireless data services, through Swiftnet (Pty) Ltd.
