Telkom Knockout launch and draw

For the fifth consecutive year, Telkom - Africa's telecommunications giant - will ignite the passion of football fans in the Telkom Knockout.

The competition will put on display the best of the PSL’s football action from October to December 2010.

The Telkom Knockout commences on the weekend of the 22 October, with the final scheduled for 4 December 2010. First-round Telkom Knockout fixtures will be played between 23 and 27 October, followed by the quarter finals on 6 and 7 November. Semi-final action will be on the weekend of 20 and 21 November followed by the grand finale on 4 December 2010.

The 1st round draw for the 16 participating teams will be made during the launch event.

As soon as the venues for the first round are known, an innovative publicity drive and road-shows will get underway to fuel the excitement for all the participating teams and fans.

"Telkom Knockout is not only about action on the field of play," said Telkom MD Ms Nombulelo Moholi. "It also aims to develop skills and encourage participation. This year's tournament will therefore build on the previous year's innovation by incorporating a full set of kit into each Man of the Match award which the winning player can donate to his alma mater or school of his choice."

"This means 15 more schools will receive brand new soccer kit. We believe it will make a contribution to revitalising the game at grass roots level. At the same time it may inspire the players as their performance can have a very tangible spinoff."

"The 2010 edition of Telkom Knockout also features an important innovation, one that speaks of our ICT acumen; the same kind of acumen that had enabled us to provide FIFA with a truly world class communication solution for the duration of the World Cup."

"Apart from the website, www.telkomknockout.co.za, which will have new features that will raise the bar on how local soccer is covered, we will also launch www.telkomknockout.mobi," said Ms Moholi.

"We are once again looking forward to partnering with Telkom in this prestigious tournament," said Premier Soccer League CEO, Kjetil Siem. Cup Football always brings out the best in teams and following the World Cup, fans have lots to look forward to as we build on the momentum of this great event. I would like to urge all soccer lovers to support this event and fill the stadiums," said Siem.

In keeping with Telkom's intention of acknowledging outstanding performance, the tournament will again reward star players with special incentive awards. These awards will be determined by an expert convener and specialist judges.

The categories are:

  • Goalkeeper of the Tournament - R100 000
  • Defender of the Tournament - R100 000
  • Midfielder of the Tournament - R100 000
  • Top Goal Scorer of the Tournament R150 000
  • Hat Trick in the Final – R100 000
  • Player of the Tournament - R200 000

No stranger to innovation, Telkom continually strives to bring new technology and innovation to the game of football. This year, look out for the new features on the Telkom Knockout Website www.telkomknockout.co.za that will provide soccer fans with enhanced access to the sport they love. Interactive channels will again be available to enable soccer fans to receive up to date information about the tournament and South African football in general.

Following on the unprecedented success of our Charity Cup's mobi site, Telkom is proud to launch www.telkomknockout.mobi, where fans can download match fixtures and statistics, screen savers and participate in fun competitions where prizes worth R100 000 are up for grabs.

The Telkom Knockout will also offer improved media liaison at the games and will provide a source of half time and full time statistics at the matches.

Through the Telkom Knockout sponsorship, Telkom aims to reach millions of passionate soccer fans through relevant marketing programs. Various promotional activities will also engender greater public interest and involvement in the Telkom Knockout. Over the duration of the tournament, members of the public also stand to win attractive prizes.
