Johannesburg, Monday, 11 October 2010 – Team SA's swimmers went for glory when they won a total of seven gold, four silver and five bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, from October 4-9.
Those who went for gold were Chad Le Clos (200m butterfly and 400m individual medley – new Games' records), Cameron van der Burgh (100m breaststroke – new Games’ record and 50m breaststroke) and Natalie du Toit (50 and 100m S9 freestyle – new Games’ records and the 100m S9 butterfly).
Team SA's Wendy Trott (800m freestyle), Roland Schoeman (50m freestyle), Heerden Herman (1500m freestyle) and the 4 x 100m medley relay team (Cameron van der Burgh, Chad le Clos, Gideon Louw and Charl Crous) proved that every cloud has a silver lining as they finished Mzansi's medal challenge off in style, in taking the runner-up spots in their respective races.
In other closely contested races, Roland Schoeman (50m butterfly), the 4 x 100m freestyle relay team (Roland Schoeman, Graeme Moore, Gideon Louw and Darian Townsend), the 4 x 200m freestyle relay team (Jean Basson, Chad le Clos, Jasper Venter and Darian Townsend), Riaan Schoeman (400m individual medley) and Gideon Louw (50m freestyle) claimed bronze medals.
In congratulating the South African swimming team on their performances, Swimming SA CEO, Shaun Adriaanse said: The results achieved by SA are something for our nation to be proud of. "Team SA's swimmers have shown a steady increase as far as their quest for medals is concerned, when we look at the previous two Commonwealth Games results in Manchester (2002) and Melbourne (2006). We are grateful to all sports fans in SA, from all communities, for rallying behind their sports heroes when SA's best took up the challenge against representatives from 71 other Commonwealth countries, in New Delhi in October," said Adriaanse.
