What is do Chat?

do Chat is an Internet telephony service. It enables users to make VoIP calls over the public Internet.

To become a do Chat user, you must register for the service and download and install the soft phone provided. The do Chat soft phone is a Software application/program that runs on your PC and emulates a normal telephone for VoIP calls.

Features

Users are assigned unique do Chat numbers enabling them to make and receive calls over the Internet. These numbers are in the range 087 200 XXXX (non-geographic) and are assigned automatically on registration. Two types of calls are possible:

  • ON-NET calls refer to calls made from one do Chat number to another do Chat number (PC-to-PC)
  • OFF-NET calls refer to calls made from a do Chat number to fixed lines (PC-to-Phone)

Other handy features include:

  • My Community – create your own online community of do Chat users with up to 5 members (non-Telkom Internet customers) and make free ON-NET calls to each other
  • Call History – view details of all the calls you've made in the last 90 days and check your prepaid balance
  • Online Directory – see who's signed up for the service, a voluntary listing of Communicator users
  • Edit Profile and Change Password – manage your profile and portal access

How do I order do Chat

There is no telephonic ordering process required. Activation is via customer self-service, and carries no additional fee.

Customers can activate the communicator service by completing the required online registration process.

On successful registration, users will be issued with a (087) doChat number and password, which is a principal account.

Users need to download and install the soft phone application on their PC. As a principal user, you may register up to 5 additional users via the MyCommunity feature.

Costs

Free calls

ON-NET (PC-to-PC) calls, made from one do Chat number to another do Chat number

These calls are absolutely free and without restriction; although calls, like any other Internet application, do contribute to the bandwidth usage where a cap (data allowance) is applicable e.g. an ADSL service.

Prepaid calls

OFF-NET calls, made from a do Chat number to mobile and fixed lines (PC-to-Phone) are charged at competitive rates.

You have to purchase credit online with your credit card, and have a sufficient balance to make Off-Net calls.
