Telkom Digital Gaming League Dota 2 tournament taking place as part of Masters League

The new Telkom Digital Gaming League (DGL) has announced that the second of its Masters tournaments, Dota 2, will take place on the weekend 22 to 24 July 2016, in Sandton, Johannesburg. For the first time in South Africa an eSports tournament will be held in a cinema, in conjunction with Ster-Kinekor.

The tournament, which will be streamed live over YouTube, will feature teams from each of the eight Masters Multi-Gaming Organisations (MGO's) respectively for the R100, 000 prize pool.

"In January we launched the DGL with the largest ever eSports prize pool in South African history. In March we held the first Masters tournament in Cape Town and now we are continuing the gaming momentum with an entirely new event. We are used to seeing eSports tournaments at conventions or in shopping malls. We are now opening the doors to a whole new audience by using Ster-Kinekor's state of the art cinemas. It's a natural fit for Telkom when we talk technology, streaming and eSports," says Enzo Scarcella, Telkom's chief marketing officer.

This tournament is the second in this year's Masters League which will culminate in the Masters main event at rAge in October, with a prize pool of R1 million. Thanks to the league, MGOs have the opportunity to compete for the largest prize pool in South African eSports history.

"We are thrilled to be in association with the highest ranking eSports tournament in Africa, the Telkom Digital Gaming League Masters. Thank you to our partners, Telkom Digital Gaming League (DGL). Spectators and gamers are in for an unmatched experience, gaming in a Ster-Kinekor theatre. With the global trend of eSports attracting gamers and spectators in their thousands across physical venues and millions online, it is the natural progression for our business to be a part of this cultural movement. The big screen, high impact, surround sound environment of cinema promises to deliver an adrenalin pumping experience," says Wanda Matandela, CEO Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

The tournament will run over three days with the winner announced on Sunday 24 July.

"With the backing of partners such as Ster-Kinekor, we can take eSports in this country to a new level for players and fans alike," says Scarcello.
