Chairman of the Telkom Foundation Trust appointed

Telkom today announced the appointment of Professors Loyiso Nongxa as Chairman of the Telkom Foundation Trust, effect as of 01 December 2013.

Professor Nongxa is the former Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), a position he held from 2003 until his retirement in 2013. Prior to this he served as Head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of the Western Cape and Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the same university.

Professor Nongxa holds a BSC (Hons) and an MSc from the University of the Western Cape. After obtaining his MSc, Professor Nongxa became South Africa's first Black Rhodes scholar, and he obtained a D.Phil from Oxford University in 1982.

Among other leadership positions he has held a number of Chairmanships, including the Review Committee of National System of Innovation, the Review Committee of the National Research Foundation Rating System, the Higher Education South Africa Research and Innovation Strategy Group and Sasol's SASOL Inzalo Foundation

He is a qualified mathematician and has been a visiting research scholar at a number of universities, including Harvard, Colorado, and Connecticut.

Says Telkom Group CEO, Mr Sipho Maseko, "The Telkom Foundation is closely involved with initiatives to improve results in the so-called STEM areas which are Science, Technology, English and Mathematics. The Foundation is especially keen to address what is nothing less than a key national priority by exploring ways of using technology, including e-learning programmes, to improve the performance of learners."

"Professor Nongxa has extensive experience in, and a deep understanding of challenges in the Science and Mathematics arena (including working with international institutions). As Chairman he will provide leadership and direction to strengthen the contribution the Foundation makes to improve the quality of teaching and learning," concludes Mr Maseko.

  • Data Centre Operations includes e-commerce, application service provider, hosting, data storage, e-mail and security services;
  • W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), a 3G next generation network, including fixed voice services, data services and nomadic voice services;
  • mobile communication services, including voice services, data services and handset sales through our mobile navbar-brand called Telkom Mobile;
  •  information and communication services including cloud services, infrastructure services, workspace services, global service integration management and hardware and network equipment sales locally, in seven African countries, the UK and Dubai through Business Connexion Group; and
  • other services including directory services, through Trudon (Pty) Ltd, wireless data services, through Swiftnet (Pty) Ltd.
