Telkom employees donate R1.9m

Telkom employees, through The Giving Organisation Trust (TGO), have made contributions towards charitable organisations that the Telkom Group has matched rand for rand.

The Company today handed over a cheque for R1.9 million to the Trust. When Telkom's "Giving from the Heart" programme was launched some years ago, employees were given four causes to contribute towards.

The options given were to support children in need, education, the elderly or adults in need and sports development.

Telkom Foundation Head Sarah Mthintso says "children in need" has by far been the most popular choice by Telkom employees. "Therefore TGO was instructed to ensure that the larger portion of the R1.9 million should go to the children in need."

Employees have been making monthly donations and the Trust was recently engaged as a partner to this initiative, "Giving from the Heart". These contributions, ranging from R5 per staff member, from a company's payroll can make a significant difference to those in need.

TGO is an independent trust and a registered public benefit organisation. Ten of South Africa's well known charities have combined their navbar-brand power to work together through TGO to create sustainable sources of income for their work. Some of the charities are: the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation (pursues excellence in research in the prevention and treatment of HIV, TB HIV and related infections), CHOC- Childhood Cancer Foundation (Creates a loving environment for children undergoing chemotherapy), Cotlands (Alleviating the suffering of children in distress in South Africa), CANSA- Cancer Association of South Africa (Offers a range of services to cancer patients and their families including counselling, support groups etc.), Ithemba Trust (assists intellectually disabled children) and the African Children's Feeding Scheme (ACFS), which provides 31 000 meals per day to poverty stricken children.

"The Trust challenges all companies big and small to join Telkom to also become a Payroll giver," says Francois Peenz, Chairman of TGO and CEO of CHOC.

Phindile Hlalele, Executive Director to ACFS commended Telkom and their staff for supporting the Payroll Giving Programme. She said this is in line with Archbishop Desmond Tutu's call to uplift societies and improve social challenges throughout South Africa.

Telkom's "Giving from the Heart" programme allows employees to make contributions financially as well as through giving time voluntarily, to organizations that work with communities.

"Telkom's mission statement talks to seamlessly connecting people to a better life. Initiatives of this nature allow employees to play an integral role to advancing this mission," says Mthintso.
