Telkom SA announces senior appointment for Enterprise Division

Nombulelo Moholi, Managing Director of Telkom SA, today announced the appointment of Dr Brian Armstrong as senior Managing Executive for Enterprise Markets, effective from 1 March 2010.

South African-born Armstrong is the former Vice-President for BT Group plc's (formerly British Telecom) Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, with overall responsibility to oversee and grow BT's activities across the region, extending from Turkey in the North, to Pakistan in the East, down to South Africa.

"Armstrong joined BT in March 2003 and was appointed regional Vice President in December 2003. He has been responsible for formulating and executing BT's regional strategy, as well as ensuring effective service delivery to BT's multinational accounts present in the MEA region," said Moholi.

She added: "During his tenure, BT established itself as a major regional player in the MEA region in the networked IT services market."

Armstrong's previous work experience includes South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), ultimately as the Director of the Division for Information and Communications Technology. He also enjoyed a stint as the Managing Director of AST Networks for South African-listed ICT services group, AST.

"In all, he has 25 years experience in ICT research and development, telecommunications, technology management, networking services and outsourcing," stated Moholi.

Born in East London, South Africa, Armstrong completed his BSc (Eng) and MSc (Eng) at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1982 and 1984 respectively, and obtained his PhD from University College London in 1992.

He has published several papers in IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Proceedings, and is a recipient of several awards. These include the Flemming Award for the best Engineering PhD thesis at University of London in 1992 and the Mountbatten Premium for the best paper published at the IEE's 1996 proceedings.

"I have no doubt that Brian possesses the necessary expertise and experience to succeed in his challenging position at Telkom. I wish him professional fulfilment and every success in all his endeavours," concluded Moholi.
